You can remove most spots on carpet with just a few easy steps. First, however, it's important to understand what is wrong with the current methods for spot removal.
Most homeowners will resort to use of over the counter products when attempting to remove spots and stains. The problem with this approach is that almost all spotting agents are alkaline based and will leave a residue in the carpet after use. In other words, it would be like washing your hair with your favorite shampoo but leaving out the rinse step! YUCK....... The end result is a spot that appears to have been removed but now is permeated with cleaning chemicals that will draw new soil and cause the stain to reappear only worse than it was before.
So how do you get around this problem? Simple! First understand that the goal in spot removal is to effectively remove the stain and leave absolutely nothing behind. With the right tools and methods, you can easily achieve your goal.
Here are the tools and products that you will want to have on hand:
- A small wet / dry vac available at the big box stores if you don't already own one. You can generally buy a small unit for around $30.00 and it will be about the size of a large lunch box.
- White vinegar and plenty of it. Buy several gallons and keep it on hand. It's cheap.
- Water.....What else can I say?
Here's how you proceed to remove the spots with your new handy dandy tools and products:
- Mix white vinegar with water 50 / 50. The vinegar is excellent for purging any residue that exists already in the carpet. Make a mixture of appoximately 16 to 32 ounces total. Adjust the amount based upon the size of the spot.
- If the spot is wet, turn on your shop vac and extract thoroughly. If it's dry, go to the next step.
- Now take your water / vinegar mix and apply a very liberal amount directly to the stain. Don't be afraid to get it substantially wet!
- Work the mixture into the stain thoroughly with a soft brush or your hand until all affected fibers are saturated.
- Now extract. Most of the stain will likely come out right away, however, repeating these steps 3 or 4 times is important. The more you repeat, the more likely you will remove all residue that caused the stain in the beginning.
If you have an extra stubborn stain, try this approach!
- Boil water in a tea kettle. Once boiling, take it over to the stain and have someone else ready to extract with the shop vac. Slowly pour the boiling water on to the stain but do not allow to dwell on the carpet fibers for long! Within a few second of hot water application, begin the extraction and continue until the stain is removed.
- No vinegar will be necessary for this approach.
